CAJ - China Academic Journals

Alliance and National Licences

For registered users, the East Asia Department provides full-text access to more than 7,200 Chinese academic and scholarly journals published between 1915 and 2010ff.

Since 2005, users with permanent residence in Germany have the opportunity to register for free access, if they have no possibility to access the data bases via a library, university, or other German research institution.

Alliance Licence

Institutions who are members of the alliance consortium for China Academic Journals are provided with unrestricted access to all current content and the complete CAJ archives.

Data base access is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and organized by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

Access: http://caj.sbb.spk-berlin.de/

National Licence

Libraries and individual users who are not members of the alliance consortium are provided with access to materials up to, and including, 2010.

Access to contents of the data base up to 2010 was subsidised by the DFG and the TIB Hannover (Proceedings of Series A-C, I) and organised by the special subject collection at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. The CAJ-Data Base is being offered via a server at the Staatsbibliothek.

Shibboleth-Access to CAJ

The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (SBB) is, in its capacity as a service provider, a member of the German Shibboleth-Federation which exists under one umbrella with the Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN-Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure; DFN-AAI).

The combination of the proxy server HAN used in the SBB with the standard service-provider-component enables all users at German academic and scholarly institutions which are also members of the Federation, as well as registered individual users of DFG-Nationalizenzen, to sign on to the SBB-offered data bases via Shibboleth with their home institutions' login data.

Producer of the data base and the online full-text contents is Tsinghua Tongfang Optical Disc Co., Ltd. (TTOD) in Beijing, PR China.

The titles of the electronical journals are documented in the OPAC of the East Asia Department.

Technical Requirements for CAJ Data Base

You need an up-to-date version of your browser in order to use the data base (Microsoft I.E. [incl. IME] or Netscape 4.7 or higher). An East Asian typefont has to be installed/activated to correctly display Chinese characters.
In order to conduct a search in the CAJ data base, Chinese simplified characters (简体字) should be used exclusively. Entries transcribed in Hanyu Pinyin are not supported.

To display documents in pdf-format, you need Adobe Reader 5.1 (or later), including the search functionality. To be able to display and read Chinese characters, you must have installed the Simplified Chinese Font Pack which can be downloaded here.

For reading the documents you may also use the data base's CAJ Viewer.

As an introduction to the use of the data base and the viewer, you might wish to refer to the UserGuide.
