You don't reside in Berlin (or nearby, viz. within the postal code zone 10 000 - 16 999) or abroad and would like to make use of our holdings in the reading room at Unter den Linden during a visit?

If you would like to use books of our general collections, it is possible to order media already before visiting. In our catalogue you can read up on the materials being available at our library. In case you wish to make use of special materials (such as maps or printed music), please contact the individual special department.

We can only recommend preliminary orders to those who do not need any personal advice. All others should order the materials desired with our assistance locally. In this case we ask for your registration on-site and for refraining from any preliminary registration.
Please note: Our library’s service is subject to fee (Monthly ticket/10 €, Annual ticket/25 €). Sorry, in case of non-appearance we have to charge you for the service fee, too.

  • Time of registration: You should give notice of your visit one week before arrival by following the instructions of registration (Please consider possible closing days of our library when planning your journey).
  • Confirmation of the SBB: Before starting your work at the SBB, we will send you a library card number and password.
  • Time of ordering: Please order 2 to 3 days before arrival. Then you will have access to the material required provided that it is available.

When receiving your library card number and password, you will also get some further information on handling of orders and contact persons.

We will provide the ordered media at site Unter den Linden 8 for you. Please order all media only for the site Unter den Linden before arrival so that we can supervise the loan period. Thus you can be sure that the media ordered are still available on your visit. Media which can only be provided in the respective special departments are excluded from this procedure. These loan requests are only passed on to the corresponding departments of our library.

  Please let us know, if you cannot keep the appointed day. Otherwise we will have to block your library card. So you cannot enter any more requests or use the library’s service until you have registered at the issue counter of our site Unter den Linden in person.
