The Newspaper Department of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin is the most recent addition to the library’s special departments. It was established in 1993, after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the Eastern and Western parts of the Staatsbibliothek. In 1997, the Newspaper Department was moved to its current location in the former large granary of Berlin’s Westhafen (western harbour), which has been converted into library stacks.

The department’s collections of daily and weekly newspapers make up the largest and most comprehensive collection of newspapers in German libraries. The collections have been brought together from the holdings of the library’s main buildings (i.e. Haus Unter den Linden and Haus Potsdamer Straße), and are continuously supplemented and expanded through the transfer of holdings from other collections. In addition to original print newspapers and microforms, the department provides access to a large and permanently growing inventory of online databases and CD-ROM editions.
