Project OCR-D, funded by DFG

Virtual reconstruction of the East Asia Collection

Project object

In 2013, the granting of funds by the Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM) and a cooperation with the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Krakow, Poland, made it possible for the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin to take the first important steps towards a virtual reconstruction of the old East Asia collection of the Prussian State Library. After the end of the Second World War, a third of the old East Asia collection, with around 1,300 numbers in approx. 20,000 volumes, was stored on Polish territory and was brought to Krakow to the Biblioteka Jagiellońska. In a first step, the collection was almost completely digitised in 2013. The digitised material is currently being used to catalogue the holdings in a way that meets today's requirements. So far, just over 1,360 titles have been catalogued, 1,280 of which can already be viewed in the Digital Collections of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.
