Special Subject Collection "Foreign Newspapers (2005-2015)"

In 1982, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin established a special collection for foreign newspapers with the support the German Research Foundation (DFG). The collection became a Special Subject Collection (SSG) in 2005, aiming to collect foreign newspapers on a representative scale, partly in the original paper form and partly on microfilm. The selection and acquisition of the foreign newspapers were closely coordinated with the collections of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (Freie Universität Berlin) and the Ibero-American Institute (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz). The John F. Kennedy Institute focused its collection on the North American region, whereas the Ibero-American Institute focused on the Spanish peninsula and Ibero-American region. The funding programme for Special Subject Collections (SSG-Programme) was terminated and replaced by the Specialised Information Services Programme (FID). As of December 31, 2015, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin no longer acquires foreign newspapers as a Special Subject Collection.

By increasing the funds of the Newspaper Department, the library has been able to partially offset the loss of the DFG funds; however, certain subscriptions for less popular foreign newspaper titles had to be cancelled. At the Westhafen location, library users can access a wide range of over 280 newspapers, 155 of them from abroad. A complete list of the foreign newspapers subscriptions since 01.01.2016 (sorted by country of publication), can be found HERE.
The foreign newspaper acquired until 31.12.2015 will continue to be available for use without restriction.
