General journals, encyclopedias and biographical literature, e.g., were collected on a universal scale. The extensive literature holdings especially relating to the history of science are a rich source for historical research. A special focus of the acquisitions was on academy as well as university publications. Publications of all important academies were collected, as well as graduate theses, directories of staff members and lectures of European and non-European universities. The collections of papers on the history of universities and academies are particularly strong.
