Newspaper Department

Using the Reading Room

In the Reading Room

The newspaper collection of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin can only be used in the Newspaper Department’s special reading room in Westhafen. The holdings are not available for at home use and cannot be made available for use in Haus Potsdamer Str. or Haus Unter den Linden.

Only microfilms (with the exception microfilms belonging to the FU Berlin’s permanent loan) are available for inter-library loans. It is possible to place digitization orders for a desired item – unfortunately we cannot carry out time-intensive research, please ensure that you provide the most accurate bibliographic information when placing your order.

You can access the majority of our wide range of online databases and CD-ROM/DVD editions without further authentication at the computer workstations in each of the library’s reading rooms; some may also be available in remote access from home. Online databases with a national license are available throughout Germany and do not require any payment for access.

For information on the use of the library’s holdings and services please consult the rules and regulations of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. These can be found in the Terms of Use, Fee Regulations as well as the House Rules. (In German.)

To use the library’s holdings and services, you must have a valid library card (monthly pass or annual pass). A valid personal document (identity card or passport) is required for registration. You may register for a library card in the reading room of the Newspaper Department – please note that we only accept cash payment.

In the Newspaper Department’s reading room you will find the latest issues of 90 of the approx. 400 daily and weekly newspapers to which the library is currently subscribed. Earlier editions are kept in the stacks and must be ordered to the reading room.

In addition to ordering your items online, you may also pre-order by e-mail or telephone. Delivery times may vary depending on the type of material requested (unbound editions, original editions, microforms).

Special conditions apply to the reproduction of newspapers as a paper copy or scan.

Guided tours of the Newspaper Department will be given on the following dates in 2019. The meeting point is the entrance area by the gatekeeper.

Tuesday, 05.03.2019, 10:00 – 12:00

Tuesday, 04.06.2019, 10:00 – 12:00 Uhr
