Mensch.Maschine.Kultur – Artificial Intelligence for the Digital Cultural Heritage

Project object 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technological trends of recent years. For libraries like the SBB, the advances made in this field offer enormous potential to improve existing areas of work and create new services. In the project "Mensch.Maschine.Kulture - Artificial Intelligence for the Digital Cultural Heritage", a total of four sub-projects are foreseen, which combine different objectives with the appropriate AI procedures. Sub-project 1 "Intelligent methods for generic document analysis" provides multimodal AI methods for document analysis so that high-quality full texts and structural data can be extracted from digitised collections. Sub-project 2 "Image analysis tools for indexing digital cultural heritage" deepens work begun on image similarity search through recognition, extraction and classification of digital image content. Sub-project 3 "AI-supported content analysis and subject indexing" creates technical possibilities to make existing expertise in the specialist departments of the SBB usable for the optimisation of AI technologies and, on the other hand, supports the experts in the specialist departments with semi-automated procedures for content and subject indexing. Sub-project 4 "Data provision and curation for AI" bundles and documents data suitable for AI and makes them publicly accessible. In addition, guidelines on how qualitatively or ethically problematic holdings and content should be recognised and handled are being developed together with the community.
