Electronic catalogues

The central catalogue of oriental manuscripts is the Qalamos database. In the context of indexing, digitization and retroconversion projects, the number of electronically recorded manuscript descriptions is growing continuously. The portal was set up as part of a DFG project. 

Manuscripts catalogued by the long-term project "Cataloguing Oriental Manuscripts in Germany" of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities have been inserted in the KOHD-Digital database since 2016.

Printed Catalogues

The oriental manuscripts are indexed in printed catalogues, most of which have appeared in the following series:

• Die Handschriften-Verzeichniss der Königlichen Bibliothek zu Berlin (23 volumes, 1853–1914)
• Verzeichnis der Orientalischen Handschriften in Deutschland (VOHD; so far 111 catalogue and 49 supplement volumes, published since 1961)

These catalogues are set up and can be used in the Orient and East Asia Reading Room in the shelf mark area OLS Bb.

A large proportion of the printed catalogues are now available in digitised form. Corresponding links can be found in the individual language groups.

The Arabic manuscripts are largely included in the catalogue compiled by Wilhelm Ahlwardt. The catalogue, published in 10 volumes between 1887 and 1899, comprises about 10,000 works in 6,500 volumes. A scanned version of the catalogue is accessible via the Internet Archive:

About 2,500 Arabic manuscripts are still uncatalogued. A large part of it (up to about acquisition year 1940) is documented in Carl Brockelmann's "Geschichte der Arabischen Litteratur" (GAL, 2nd edition) with shelf number.
