The Eastern Europe Department manages the membership of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin in the Association of Libraries and Documentation Centers for East, East Central and Southeastern European Studies (ABDOS).

ABDOS is a working group of institutions and specialists who acquire, collect, and index the content of literature from and over East, East Central and Southeastern Europe.

The association is also open to all those who deal with Eastern Europe in research and teaching. The working group promotes the exchange of information and experience in library, archive and documentation service, in particular with regard to the acquisition and development of printed and electronic media. 

The association promotes contacts between librarians, documentalists, and scholars and organizes annually scientific and education conferences.

In addition, the Eastern Europe Department maintains contacts with numerous libraries and other scientific institutions of Eastern European research at home and abroad.
