Facts and Figures

The Eastern Europe Collection comprises about 1.4 million books. Every year, about 12,000 volumes are added to the collection. The Eastern Europe department has 2,750 current subscriptions to print journals (including yearbooks and magazine-style series as of 2020) and a total of 20,000 Eastern European printed periodicals and newspapers, including parliamentary and official publications. The department offers a wide range of licensed and freely accessible online and electronic resources. The most important reference literature, approximately 32,000 volumes, is immediately available for use in the Eastern Europe Reading Room of the Haus Potsdamer Straße.

Countries and Languages

The Eastern Europe Department acquires literature from:
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Greece (from 1812 onwards), Kosovo, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sorbian-speaking regions, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, Belarus and Cyprus. Eastern European literature is acquired in more than 30 languages. Literature from the national minorities from the mentioned countries is also taken into account.  In addition, publications about these countries are also acquired in Western European languages – mainly German, English and French.
